Description Years of Dedication Behind Every Fish Our Bulgarian Seal Point Angelfish are one of the most visually striking varieties we produce, displaying a dramatic contrast between dark fins and a lighter body that sets them apart from most other angelfish varieties. The combination of Dark and Bulgarian Green genes creates a unique and complex phenotype that continues to develop and refine through adulthood, with the body losing any juvenile dark coloring while fin coloring deepens or lightens based on the individual fish’s health, mood, and behavior. Understanding the Genetics Bulgarian Seal Point Angelfish carry a combination of the Dark gene and a double dose of the Bulgarian Green gene. Those that develop lighter grey fin coloring are expressed as D/ bg/bg, carrying one copy of the Dark gene alongside the wild type allele. Those displaying deeper black fin coloring carry two copies of the Dark gene expressed as D/D bg/bg. Some individuals may also carry a copy of the Stripeless gene. Because the Bulgarian Green gene already removes stripes from the body, a single copy of Stripeless produces no visible change in appearance in this variety, though it may influence offspring when used in breeding programs. Five Years to Produce a Veil The Bulgarian Green gene does not follow the expected genetic rules that govern other known freshwater angelfish genes, making selective breeding for specific traits considerably more challenging. After years of attempting to reliably produce BSP Veil fin individuals and raising thousands of fish in the process, we finally achieved what we had been working toward. After pairing the first successful Veil expressing fish we have now been able to reliably reproduce BSP Veils. An unexpected bonus from this work has been discovering that our Standard fin BSP are now stronger and less prone to fin deformities than before, a direct result of the careful pairing work done to establish the Veil line. Fin Types Available in both Standard and Veil fin types when in stock.
