Air driven and virtually silent, these filters are ideal for fry tanks where protecting delicate fish from strong currents is essential, shrimp tanks, planted aquariums, and any community tank where a reliable biological filter is needed as a primary or backup filtration source. How to Set Up Before first use soak the bio sponge in aquarium water for 5 minutes to remove trapped air and ensure it stays submerged. Attach the filter to the aquarium glass using the included suction cups, connect airline tubing to your air pump, and the filter is ready to run. Maintenance Sponge filters only require cleaning when they become visibly loaded with debris. When cleaning always rinse the sponge in aquarium water or dechlorinated water. Tap water may kill the beneficial bacteria living in the sponge, particularly on newer filters that have not yet established a mature colony. Well established sponges can sometimes tolerate a quick tap water rinse, but aquarium water is always the safest choice and should be the default practice.
